Capital City CASA History

Our History

The Capital City CASA program was incorporated/established under the umbrella of the Kiwanis Club of Jefferson City, MO, in February, 2009. The Kiwanis Club recognized a need in Cole County, Missouri and saw the CASA program as an opportunity to continue and further its work in helping children. The Kiwanis Club formed a committee to establish the CASA program. The Kiwanis hired the first Executive Director of the program, Dr. James Kellerman.  The Executive Director hit the ground running and working with the CASA committee put together an extensive public relations plan to help the citizens of Cole County, Missouri answer the questions “What is CASA?” We were immediately able to recruit and train eleven volunteers and saw them appointed and sworn in by Judge Jon Beetem, 19th Circuit Court of Missouri on January 17, 2011. And after that date (January 17, 2011) we were then able to begin assigning volunteers. It is the goal of Judge Beetem that every new case be given a CASA volunteer. The need in the 19th Judicial Circuit of Cole County Missouri is great with approximately 140 kids in the system without a CASA volunteer.
